Fabrication of Interdigitated Microelectrode Impedance Sensor

Hi

Do you think is possible to fabricating this kind of sensors in micrometers range? Right now I am waiting for arrival Voltera machine, but I want suggestions about minimum size obtained.

Hello Ozcarlosa.

There is not much dimensional information in these drawings. But maybe you can.
After getting experience, I have no problem making somewhat similar traces. 10 millinch wide traces spaced 10 millinch - which is 0.254 mm wide and 0.254 mm spacing.

You likely will not achieve such small spacing and traces very quickly. Take your time, make some mistakes, and you will get better each time.

Hi @ozcarlosa, it’s definitely possible to print simple interdigitated electrodes with the V-One, but the resolution is limited. From my experience, with the 225 micron nozzle you can expect get down to maybe 250-300 micron traces, I think. The spacing will be similar.

I have used the V-One for a few dozen boards trying to push the limits of trace width and trace spacing. I agree that 10mil (254μm) using the metal 225-micron nozzle. If you get the 150-micron nozzle you may be able to be to 6mil (150μm) with some patience and tuning of the flow parameters.
Overall, I’d estimate you could make a sensor as small as 3-5mm but sub 1mm would be difficult to achieve… There is another concern with printing the sensor, since this is cured ink the trace resistance is significantly higher than solid metal and will likely impact the sensitivity of your sensor.
Now I mostly use the V-One for Arduino shields and Pi hats with the plastic nozzles. For those I use 16mil or 24mil traces (2 or 3 passes) to ensure continuity and reduce resistance.
