Conformal Coatings

Making my first board to be used in a customer’s project. The board will be sandwiched between acrylic and aluminum. Because of the aluminum I would like to insulate the board. I thought a conformal coating would be best and I think there are two options

1. silicon based. Has anyone had luck with silicon coating?
2. acrylic based. Well I tried the acrylic an this definitely dissolves the ink traces and all the SMDs pop off with little force.

Non-standard coatings;
*)How about epoxy?
*)If all else fails, is my best option Kapton tape?

I have used hot glue to help reinforce surface-mount headers and switches. While it a bit messy, it might help with your situation. The hot glue is not reactive and is at a cool enough temperature to not melt the traces.

I bet hot glue works well. Wil; be too bulky in my situation.

How about insulating board before fitting components with a photo resist and fit components and reflow after.

Teflon

Very strong, voltage wise. A very thin sheet should be good.

Silicon is effective and easy to work with. Haven’t used it on a V-One PCB yet but no reason it shouldn’t be effective. One nice thing about it is you can solder through it if you need to make any adjustments.

Make sure you’ve got a few mm space between the aluminum and your board. I don’t think the silicon would hold up well to chronic abrasion.

I ordered some silicone spray from the same manufacturer and will give that a try.
